“Without water, our planet would be one of the billions of lifeless rocks floating endlessly in the vastness of the inky-black void."— Fabien Cousteau.

World Ocean Day: Significance and Celebration

This day is celebrated internationally each year on June 8 to celebrate the oceans of the world. It aims to bring awareness about how to conserve ocean life. Over decades and centuries, we have been taking our oceans for granted, not keeping in mind how so many different communities are dependent on ocean livelihoods, how the ocean maintains the fragile ecological balance and how it provides us with such valuable resources. For long, we have been abusing the powers of the ocean and being aloof of our consequences of the indiscriminate consumption of its resources.

This day brings global awareness about the importance of oceans and provides the unique opportunity to conserve and protect the oceanic environment which could give us the solution of good health for humankind. It is our duty as individuals to take on conservation and preservation this natural treasure, in which ever little way we can.

History:

The Brundtland Commission in 1992 noted that the ocean sector lacked proper representation in terms of conservation efforts, compared to the vast utility of the potent resource. The concept of World Ocean Day was proposed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992.

World Ocean Day was officially established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2008 to be celebrated worldwide on 8th of June every year to resolve the issues in relation to the preservation of oceans and to save ocean water for the increment of natural resources. This is an innovative step of engaging more youth in the campaign and for saving ocean water. So messages are spread through social media for greater awareness of this noble cause.

2021 Theme:

It is to be noted that a healthy ocean is a critical part of the solution to the climate crisis that is currently plaguing the earth. Protection of the earth’s life support system is necessary for its innate interconnectedness with climate, biodiversity and economy. Each year a different theme is taken up and measures for conservation and protection of our Blue Planet is drawn up.

In 2021, the theme for World Ocean day is “The Ocean: Life and Livelihood”. In celebration and support of the life and livelihood that the ocean sustains, UNWOD 2021, will feature keynotes, panel discussions and presentations that spotlight biodiversity, latest oceanic discoveries, the interconnectivity between the ocean and its ecosystems, and more.

Water Signs in our Zodiac panel:

Now while discussing ocean and water as a resource, it is imminent that we talk about the water element that comprises one of the astrological venues. Our astrological venue comprises of four elements: Fire, Earth, Air, and Water. All of them are powerful in their own way but here we will bring forth the strength of water signs.

Water has the strength as it stills the wind (air), erodes the land (earth) and quenches fires (fire element). Therefore, there is a need to understand the power of water sign that will bring forth the depth of emotional power of astrology's Water signs.

The three Water signs are Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. The Water houses are the fourth, eighth, and twelve houses of the natural zodiac and are known well for being sensitive and sentimental and will cling to people and items for long duration of time with which their emotional sentiments are attached. They are also fluid, flexible and adaptable just like water element.

Those born under the Cancer sign are natural are naturally inclined to take care of others and their compassion knows no limits where the natives will do anything to protect the people they love from any external harm. Moon is your personal planet and it rules the emotional world, where they have a deep connection with their feelings that allows them to understand and correlate with the way people feel as their emotions are always flowing like the waves of the oceans. Jupiter, being your personal planet of adventure and expansion, makes it difficult for you to confine yourself in a certain way or surroundings. A Pisces native really wants to be free in self and soul. You are fluid and free and have a mind of your own, just like your water element.
