Prince Philip Biography

Prince Philip was the Duke of Edinburgh – the Greek-Danish husband of Queen Elizabeth II from the year 1947 till his death in the year 2021. He was the longest-serving consort of a reigning British monarch Queen Elizabeth II (1952-2021, 68 years) and, having died at age 99, the oldest male member of the British royal family. He was a prince of both Greece and Denmark by virtue of his patrilineal descent [inheritance] from George I of Greece and Christian IX of Denmark. He was the successor to both the thrones by birth.

He was educated at schools in France, England and Germany, and attended Gordonstoun School which was even attended by his children for their schooling. In the year 1939, he left Gordonstoun School and joined the Royal Navy as a cadet and earned the status of Commander of the Frigate HMS MAGPIE in 1952, but ended his naval career with the death of his father-in-law, King George VI.

Prince Philip tied his matrimonial knot with Princess Elizabeth of England on 20 November 1947 at Westminster Abbey. In the year 1952, the Queen endorsed him with the title the ‘Duke of Edinburgh’ – a Knight of the Thistle. More endorsements were showered on him by the queen in February 1957. He was made a prince of the United Kingdom, being known from then on as "Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh." Whereas he had no official role in the monarchy, but it is presumed that he had a strong influence in the upbringing of his children.

The Prince played a prominent involvement in the many arenas of the British national life, scientific and technological research, the encouragement of sports, and conservation of the environment. He was the first President of World Wildlife Fund - UK from the year 1961 to 1982 and International President of World Wide Fund for Nature from the year 1981 to 1996. He became President Emeritus of the WWF.

At the age of 79, the prince fulfilled all 557 official engagements and retired from his royal duties on 2nd August 2017 at the age of 96, having completed 22,219 solo engagements since 1952. He had a personality of strong will and tenure of hard work and was the backbone of British Monarchy and the devoted husband of the Queen Elizabeth II. This eternal bundle of strength left for his heavenly abode on 9^th April 2021 at Windsor castle at the age of 99 years very peacefully.
