Planets in Houses

In astrology, houses are assigned certain characteristics and planets too have a specific nature. So, when a planet sits in a house, it impacts the area of your life the house represents with its own traits. If we know what the houses and planets stand for, we can easily predict how different planets will behave in each house.

Have you ever wondered why you look the way you do?  Why do you feel so shy and avoid public speaking? Why are some people born with a silver spoon and others struggle in life?

Well, what if I tell you that there is an answer to these questions!

The answers to these questions are hidden in the stars and with the help of astrology, we can uncover these secrets by simply creating a map of the sky and tracking down the location of the planets, with respect to the Earth. Now, in order to track down the celestial bodies, the sky is divided into 12 parts known as zodiac signs that keep on moving with the rotation and revolution of the Earth. Another similar division of the sky (12 parts) is made and are called houses—these remain fixed, and the signs mentioned above move through these houses. The first house is fixed at the eastern horizon with respect to your place of birth—whichever sign is rising in that house at the exact time of your grand entrance into being, that sign becomes your ascendent sign.

Now, as we know that the planets move through these signs and houses, so whatever position of planets was there during your birth is documented in the form of a chart and studied thoroughly by astrologers in order to give you accurate predictions!

Wondering how astrologers make such precise predictions about you?

Well, that’s an astrology secret that I am going to reveal to you!

They notice the placement of planets in the houses where each house stands for some specific area of your life and each planet has a specific nature as well. So, according to their nature, the planets impact the house they are placed in, thus impacting the area of your life that the house represents.

Let’s understand it better with an example.

If Saturn is placed in the 10th house of your chart, what will be the result?

We know that Saturn stands for slowness, obstacles, darkness, restriction, perfection, strictness, seriousness, delays, etc.

And the 10th house stands for your style of work, boss, profession, etc.

So, we can conclude that the placement of Saturn in your 10th house will give you a strict boss and a restrictive workplace environment. Also, it will make you a perfectionist and slow down your working speed. Lastly, you may face many obstacles in your career path, which may lead to delays in finding a good job, and so on.

NOTE: The results will also depend a great deal on which sign Saturn is occupying in the 10th house. So please refer to our Planets in Signs page for deeper insight and more accurate results.

And that’s why understanding the placement of planets in different houses is crucial in order to clear your astrology basics!

12 Houses in Vedic Astrology

As mentioned above, there are 12 houses in astrology that represent various aspects of our life. The houses always remain fixed and the 1st house is always present in the top-middle portion of the chart. The counting of houses is done in an anticlockwise direction, and while reading a birth chart, the number of the houses is not mentioned in the chart; instead the sign’s number is mentioned. Therefore, the numbering of the houses must be remembered.

The 4 houses in the middle of the chart–1st, 4th, 7th & 10th are known as “Kendra” houses and are considered as most important and most auspicious houses of the chart. Major life areas like marriage, family, career and self are connected to these houses. Other than the Kendra houses, the “Trikona houses”, meaning the 1st, 5th and 9th houses, also play a vital role in our life and represent children, education, religion and spirituality. Trikona houses are also very auspicious. Lastly, the 6th, 8th and 12th houses of our birth chart are known as the “Trik” houses and are associated with all the adversities we face in life, such as debt, disease, losses, expenses, accidents, enemies, and the like.

NOTE: The first house also known as the “Lagna” is a part of both Kendra and Trikona houses, and hence, holds the most important place among all the houses in your birth chart.

Rules to Read Planets in Houses

Now that we know what the houses and planets stand for, we can easily predict how different planets will behave in each house. Still, there are some basic things you should know:

  • Placement and Aspect of benefic planets will always enhance the house, bringing positive results.
  • Although, the placement of Jupiter will be positively interpreted in a house, but still its aspect will do better because wherever Jupiter is placed, it brings its heaviness (biggest planet) along with it, reducing the positive results.
  • The placement of malefic planets in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses, known as the “Upachaya Bhava”, enhances these houses and brings you success and wealth, since these houses are growth oriented and require strength and strategy of malefic planets for positive results.
  • In general, the placement of malefic planets will bring challenges related to living things associated with that house and growth related to non-living things.
  • The aspect of malefic planets, however, will bring adversities and challenges to both living and non-living things in that house.
  • The ownership of the planets is also important, for example, if Mercury is the owner of the 4th house of real estate and gets placed in the 2nd or 11th houses of wealth and gains, it would mean that you will gain through your real estate investments or have a rental income.
  • The placement of most planets in Kendra or Trikona houses will show a harmonious life with a lot of growth opportunities.
  • The placement of most planets in Trik houses will show a life full of struggles.
  • In case of planetary conjunctions in a house, the combined results of the qualities of planets should be considered.
  • Houses with 3 or more planets become dense and your life would revolve around the areas of life associated with these.
