Muntha: Affects as per Vedic Astrology

The concept of ‘Muntha’ emanates in Varshpahal astrology. Varshphal is an annular astrology system which acts as a fate indicator for a concerned year. Muntha is the mathematical focal point in the annular horoscope which indicates the experiences of a native throughout the year.

Upon the name ‘Muntha’, various astrologers and men of letters forwarded different opinions to decide its origin. They suggest that the name originated from ‘Intiha’ and gradually changed its form through time and generations to ‘Mintiha’, ‘Mintha’, ‘Munthaha’ and eventually to ‘Muntha’.

Muntha is one of the important factors in analyzing the fate of a person in a year and in what areas of life a person would be engaged in during that period.

How to Calculate Muntha?

Muntha can be calculated in two ways:

  1. House
  2. Rashi

  1. House (Muntha Calculation): This method is generally used by astrologers.

        (Completed Year + 1) ÷ 12 = Remainder will be Muntha House

  1. Rashi (Muntha Calculation): Here, Lagna (ascendant) is required to calculate the muntha.

(Completed Years + Sign Number of Ascendant) ÷ 12 = Remainder will be Muntha House

In the first year of birth, Muntha is placed in the Ascendant. In the second year it is in the 2nd house of the annular horoscope and every year it keeps transiting forward by one house. In the thirteenth year, Muntha again transits back to the Ascendant. That is why Muntha is also called ‘Unnat Lagna’.

Munthesh

The planetary lord of the house in which Muntha is placed is called the Munthesh. It is equally important in Varshphal analysis along with Muntha.

The Dignity of Muntha and Munthesh in Predictions

The point of incidence of Muntha upon a house and its Munthesh in the annular horoscope chart of a person decides the circumstances, success or failure and the center of engagement in the concerned year.

The decorum of Munthesh in relation to its position, aspect and conjunction with other planets, also plays an important role in analyzing the annular horoscope.

  • Muntha is considered excellent when its placed in the 1st, 9th , 10th, 11th houses of the Varshaphal chart.
  • When Muntha is placed in 2nd, 3rd, and 5th houses it provides good results.
  • While Muntha is in 4th,7th, 6th, 8th, 12th houses they confer worst possible results in accordance with the promise made in the native’s chart.

Muntha and Munthesh in the perception of Aspects

The different planetary aspects cast their influence upon Muntha and Munthesh in various ways. Generally, the benefic planets influence in a positive way, and the malefic planets influence in a negative way. However, the placement of the house of both Muntha and Munthesh is important along with it.

There are four types of Aspects.

  • 5th and 9th houses from Muntha are auspicious – They help each other openly.
  • 3rd and 11th house from Muntha is also friendly – They help each other secretly.
  • 4th and 10th house from Muntha is inimical – Behaves as enemy; but secretly.
  • Planets in same sign/ 7th from Muntha – Open enemies.

In the light of Rahu and Ketu - ‘With a Different Perception’

Some eminent astrologers believe that if Muntha is placed with Rahu, the first six months of the native is usually spent good, and it is the later six months that inauspicious events may occur in life. While, with Ketu, it confers bad experiences in the first six months to the native and then the next six months turn out auspicious for the native.

The mention of Rahu here as a node of planet Moon is always retrograde. In a given sign the longitude of Rahu denotes the distance he has yet to travel in that particular sign. As Rahu is retrograde, he enters a sign/house from behind.

Example: If we take Rahu’s longitude as 20° in Cancer, it is understood that Rahu is yet to cover 20° in Cancer.

This is why Muntha gives good results in the first six months if placed with Rahu because the degrees of Rahu do not actually ingress him. Muntha with Rahu is also denoted as ‘Muntha in the mouth of Rahu’.

Similarly, it is the reverse with Ketu.

Role of Jupiter

Jupiter is the ultimate beneficiary in bestowing auspicious results in the planetary confluence in a native’s horoscope. It signifies birth, happiness, education, favors from teachers and mentors, fortune, luck, influence and association from the government. Generally, it is considered good.

In Varshphal, if Jupiter is directly or indirectly connected to Muntha it acts as a protector from problems. A benefic aspect from Jupiter can reverse or provide protection to the native in very adverse circumstances.
