A.R. Rahman, born 6 January 1967, is a renowned Indian music producer, composer, singer and song-writer known world over for his unparalleled style. Born as A.S. Dileep Kumar, he started playing the piano at just age four. After his musician father passed away when he was nine, young Rahman played music professionally to support his family. Later, he studied Western classical music at Trinity College, London, which would support the fusion music he is known for. In his 20’s, Rahman converted to Islam and took on the name he is known by today.
His score for the Tamil film Roja (1994) brought him into instant limelight and garnered him rave reviews and many awards. Since then, Rahman has created music for over 145 films in a variety of languages, and many of his compositions have gone on to become chartbusters.
Rahman is known for his philanthropy. He is separated from his wife of 29 years, Saira Banu. Together, they have three children.
